BD-E8500Smart 3D Blu-ray Playerwith 500Gb Freeview HD Recorder

Record your favourite entertainment and watch it whenever and wherever you want. The Samsung BD-E8500 Blu-ray Player lets you record two channels at the same time, so you don’t have to miss a thing. With Picture in Picture, you can even watch both at the same time, or watch one while browsing the web. You’re not tied to your living room by cables either, with Smart View wirelessly streaming to smartphones, PCs, tablets and other compatible Samsung devices. Thanks to Remote Access, you can stay entertained when you’re away from home, too.

Very good machine now the bugs have mostly been sorted out

"To anyone thinkinking about getting one of these, then please make sure it has a decent internet connection (wifi or wired ethernet) and update it to the latest firmware - v1008 at the time of writing.
The earlier bugs seem to have been dealt with and the samsung iplayer and lovefilm apps are downloadable and work!
The picture quality is excellent, especially using HD and the user interface is responsive enough not to be annoying - probably due to the dual core processor used in this unit.
Overall, it is a pleasent gadget to use and is very good at what it does (which is a lot!). Just make sure you have a good internet connection that it can use.

Great Product but....

"This is a very fine product but connected to my Samsung TV (UE40ES6900) they seem to have a mind of their own. I also have a Yamaha A/V receiver (RX-V373) which further complicates things. My main problem, for which I can find no solution, is when a new recording starts, a recorded program that I am watching will stop. To restart the playback, I have to go back to My Contents and restart the playback then jump forward using Scene Select to get back to where I was. I have determined this is a known issue since product release!!"

Delighted with this product - have used allfunctions and they perform well. Would give 5 stars but menus to access HDD recordings are over-complicated

"Product does what it says. The smart functions work well. Live and recorded Freeview HD is excellent and the BD player works fine. AllShare works well with my Galaxy SII smartphone and with my PC and laptop. One minor criticism which results in four stars rather than five is the access to recorded HDD programmes through the menus could be made easier and perhaps a 'library' button on the remote would help."

Not As Expected

"Lets start by saying that the appearence of this unit is very good, one of samsungs best to date.It also corrects the fatal issue of the previous model not being able to record two programes at once. The epg is one of the best there is with its preview screen etc.We have had this unit for three weeks so far but we are considering returning it to the shop because of a couple of issues.
1] recording:so far it has failed to series record one programe and also missed another,no reasons given.
2] apps: it says on the box that it features BBC iPlayer and Google maps (among others) but dispite three updates they are still missing.we wanted these features to use in the lounge and feel cheated they are not there.
3] samsung support: dispite phone calls we have had no joy from samsung, there support service appears to be very poor,so we cant wholly recommed at this time.

It could be great

"I bought this recently because I wanted to be able to have one box to do it all, Netflix, iplayer, record hd tv etc. The products physical design is good but the apps / smart hub section is awful. For example, one of the primary functions is to record tv. There is no direct access to recorded tv but there is to browsing the web (which is possibly the worst interface I have ever seen). This makes no sense to me and it feels like the design team have put form over function. It's a shame really because with a simple redesign of the software this would be pretty much perfect.
In terms of what is good:
Set up is easy
Picture quality is excellent
Recorded tv playback is excellent
Looks good
DNLA works ok but struggles with larger folders
Netflix is good (better than acetrax which lacks content and is far more expensive)
What is not good:
Menu slow
Cannot remove some apps that I will never use
Screensaver is not customisable (using photos would be great but you can't. There is only a low res Samsung icon that looks cheap)
Menu not logical
You cannot skip forwards in recorded tv, you can only fast forward or backward.
Weird selection of direct access buttons on remote for secondary features (such as web, social tv, search)

WILL NOT WORK WITH IPAD or MAC AND CANNOT STREAM RECORDED TV TO ANYTHING.

"" With it, you can access the Blu-ray to watch your favourite movie or other video content—anywhere, anytime. " NO YOU CANNOT !
"watch it whenever and wherever you want." No YOU CANNOT!
You can move music / movie / pictures to the units hard drive, BUT these files are the ONLY files that you can stream ! You cannot watch 1 channel in the lounge and another be streamed to office / bedroom for example. ......SO WHAT IS THE POINT ?
The IPAD app is a remote control only ! again WHAT IS THE POINT ?
To access a "shared" file ( one that you had already and sent to the unit ), you must navigate through a maze of buttons to find it . VERY BAD DESIGN of software and remote control handset
The user interface is overly complicated.
PLEASE........... WRITE AN APP SO THAT WE CAN USE THIS WITH AN IPAD !"
Cons: Did not meet expectations, cannot be used with ipad, cannot stream / share recorded programs

Beautiful design, only blu-ray works properly, DVD and all share have serious picture issues

"Every feature you could want, if only they worked. When not plugged into a TV antenna, the "snow" no signal sign is all you get, and the noise of this is visible right through every all-share of DVD you play! Terrible, and inexcusible quality issue. BR playback nice, but suggest you avoid this and buy a BR player only."
Cons: Not high def, Did not meet expectations
